Journalistic Code of Ethics

This Journalistic Code of Ethics serves as the foundation for all editorial activities at HaloSumut. It reflects our commitment to responsible journalism, integrity, and public trust.


⚖️ 1. Accuracy & Verification

Journalists must always present accurate, verified, and balanced information.

  • Information must be checked and cross-verified before publication
  • Sources should be credible and clearly identified whenever possible
  • Errors must be corrected promptly and transparently

🧭 2. Independence

Journalists must remain independent and free from external influence.

  • Editorial decisions must not be influenced by advertisers, sponsors, or political interests
  • Conflicts of interest must be avoided
  • Journalists must not accept bribes or incentives that could affect objectivity

⚖️ 3. Fairness & Balance

Journalists must provide fair coverage and respect all parties involved.

  • Present multiple perspectives in controversial issues
  • Avoid bias, discrimination, or misrepresentation
  • Respect the presumption of innocence

🔒 4. Privacy & Humanity

Journalists must respect individual privacy and human dignity.

  • Avoid publishing personal data without clear public interest
  • Show sensitivity in reporting tragedies, crimes, or vulnerable groups
  • Protect the identity of victims, especially minors and sexual crime victims

🚫 5. Prohibition of False Information

Journalists must not publish:

  • False, misleading, or fabricated information
  • Plagiarized content
  • Defamatory or slanderous material

  • News must be clearly separated from opinion or commentary
  • Opinion pieces must be presented transparently and responsibly

📢 7. Ethical Reporting Practices

Journalists must:

  • Use ethical methods in gathering information
  • Avoid deception unless justified by strong public interest
  • Identify themselves clearly when conducting interviews

  • Errors must be corrected promptly
  • Individuals have the right to respond to content that affects them
  • Corrections must be published in a clear and visible manner

HaloSumut is accountable to the public.

  • We are open to criticism, feedback, and complaints
  • Editorial decisions must be transparent and responsible
  • Violations of this code may result in internal sanctions

⚖️ 10. Compliance with Laws

All journalistic activities must comply with applicable laws and regulations in Indonesia, as well as internationally recognized standards of press freedom and responsibility.
